About this report

This is a market-wide snapshot, not an audit of a single business. We picked one competitive local market — dance and ballroom instruction in the San Jose, CA area — and ran the same measurement against every studio that competes for it: an automated site-quality grade across seven categories, where each studio shows up in Google's local results, and 6 live checks asking three AI engines who they'd recommend for two real buyer queries. Every studio named below is graded on identical criteria, on the same day, with no advance notice.

The point isn't to single any one studio out — it's to show what an AI-search-era competitive landscape actually looks like once you measure it instead of guessing at it. If your studio is one of the 15 below, this is where you stand today.

Full-field scorecard — all 15 studios

Site build quality, ranked by overall score. Same engine, same day, same 7 categories.

What the field shows

• Artista Dance by Annaliza (88) and Arthur Murray Dance Studio Los Gatos (86) lead on site quality, and the field runs down to 40. Two scores are shared.
• No studio earns an A for AI readiness. The field averages 66 (D) on the category that decides whether an AI engine can read, trust and quote a site; the best score in the market is 85.
• None of the 15 studios has FAQ or Q&A structured data, and 8 have no llms.txt file — the two cheapest AI-answer signals available. No studio in the market has both.
• Three of the 15 are franchise locations (two Arthur Murray and one Fred Astaire); the rest are independent studios.
• The gap between #1 and #15 is 48 points on identical criteria. Nothing in the scorecard requires a rebuild or a rebrand to close it — just the work.

What Google shows today

Before anyone asks an AI engine, there's the map. We recorded where each studio appears in Google's local results (the list behind the map pack) for four San Jose-area searches and one Sunnyvale search, top 20 only. — means not in the top 20.

• Two studios made the top seven of all four San Jose searches, whichever style was searched.
• The four studios in Los Gatos and Santa Clara appear 9 times across the 80 local positions checked, the highest at #4.
• Organic results are a different fight. For “best dance studios in san jose ca”, Yelp's list is the #1 organic result, and one studio in the field reaches page one. For “ballroom dance studio san jose”, the field holds six of the page-one spots.
• San Jose studios also show up for Sunnyvale. On “ballroom dance lessons sunnyvale ca”, seven studios from this field appear in the top 20, the highest at #2.

What the AI engines actually say

6 live checks: three engines (ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI) × two buyer-intent queries. Live sessions in each engine's public web app, and every name below was read from the raw engine answer. Bold = a studio in this field.

Query: “best ballroom dance studios in San Jose, CA”

The high-intent query — someone who already knows what style they want.

Query: “best dance studios in San Jose, CA”

The broad query — anyone looking for a dance studio of any kind.

• The AI engines only named studios inside San Jose. Every mention of a studio in this field went to one of the eleven inside the city; the four in Los Gatos and Santa Clara were never named in any of the 6 checks.
• The broad question gets answered with other kinds of studios. Of the 15 names the three engines gave for “best dance studios in San Jose, CA”, twelve are ballet, youth, fitness or other studios outside this field.
• The map leader is also the AI leader here. The studio with the strongest Google local positions is named in 5 of the 6 AI checks, 1 of them at #1.
• Site score doesn't decide it. The best-built site in the field (Artista Dance by Annaliza, 88) was never named by any engine, and the most-named studio ranks 12th of 15 on site quality.

AI visibility vs. site quality

How many of the 6 checks named each studio, and the best rank it achieved anywhere. Sorted by mentions, then by best rank.

Seven of the 15 studios are never named on any of the 6 checks: Artista Dance by Annaliza, Arthur Murray Dance Studio Los Gatos, San Jose Bachata Nights, We Evolve Dance, Mambonova Dance Company, Do Your Own Swing, Volaré Studios. For a studio not doing this work, that's the default outcome — not a penalty, just the result of nobody in that seat having claimed it yet.

What separates the winners from the rest

• Off-site proof, not just on-site polish. AI answers draw on what other sites say about a studio, not just on its own pages, so reviews, directory listings and a complete Google profile carry real weight.
• Being unmistakably “in San Jose.” Every AI mention went to a studio inside the city. Studios that serve San Jose from nearby towns need pages, profiles and listings that say so in the words people search.
• A complete, specific site. The strongest sites have no missing H1s or meta descriptions, alt text on their images, and schema that describes what the studio actually is.
• Content matched to how people actually ask. The broad question and the ballroom question pull from different result sets — a studio needs to answer both.
