About this report

This is a market-wide snapshot, not an audit of a single business. We picked one competitive local market — dance and ballroom instruction in the West Houston, TX area — and ran the same measurement against every studio that competes for it: an automated site-quality grade across seven categories, where each studio shows up in Google's local results, and 6 live checks asking three AI engines who they'd recommend for two real buyer queries. Every studio named below is graded on identical criteria, on the same day, with no advance notice.

The point isn't to single any one studio out — it's to show what an AI-search-era competitive landscape actually looks like once you measure it instead of guessing at it. If your studio is one of the 12 below, this is where you stand today.

Full-field scorecard — all 12 studios

Site build quality, ranked by overall score. Same engine, same day, same 7 categories.

What the field shows

• Dance Journey Studios (99) and Houston Ballroom Dance (83) lead on site quality, and the field runs down to 52. One score is shared.
• One of 12 earns an A for AI readiness. The field averages 71 (C).
• Of the 12 studios, 11 have no FAQ or Q&A structured data, and 7 have no llms.txt file — the two cheapest AI-answer signals available. Only one has both.
• Four of the 12 are franchise locations (three Fred Astaire and one Dance With Me); the rest are independent studios.
• The gap between #1 and #12 is 47 points on identical criteria. Nothing in the scorecard requires a rebuild or a rebrand to close it — just the work.

What Google shows today

Before anyone asks an AI engine, there's the map. We recorded where each studio appears in Google's local results (the list behind the map pack) for five West Houston-area searches and one Houston search, top 20 only. — means not in the top 20.

• No studio made the top seven of all five West Houston searches.
• Salsa is its own map. Two studios in the salsa search's top ten don't appear in the ballroom search's top 20 at all — the two searches reach largely different studios.
• The four studios in Katy appear 5 times across the 100 local positions checked, the highest at #1.
• Organic results are a different fight. For “best dance studios in west houston tx”, Yelp's list is the #1 organic result, and zero studios in the field reach page one. For “ballroom dance studio west houston”, the field holds one of the page-one spots.
• West Houston studios also show up for Houston. On “ballroom dance lessons houston tx”, four studios from this field appear in the top 20, the highest at #1.

What the AI engines actually say

6 live checks: three engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI) × two buyer-intent queries. Live sessions in each engine's public web app, and every name below was read from the raw engine answer. Bold = a studio in this field.

Query: “best ballroom dance studios in west Houston, TX”

The high-intent query — someone who already knows what style they want.

Query: “best dance studios in west Houston, TX”

The broad query — anyone looking for a dance studio of any kind.

• The broad question gets answered with other kinds of studios. Of the 15 names the three engines gave for “best dance studios in west Houston, TX”, eleven are ballet, youth, fitness or other studios outside this field.
• A studio from a neighbouring area shows up in the ballroom answers. River Oaks School of Dancing in central Houston was named in one of the three ballroom answers; it's ranked with its own area, not here.
• The map leader is also the AI leader here. The studio with the strongest Google local positions is named in 2 of the 6 AI checks, 1 of them at #1.
• Site score doesn't decide it. The best-built site in the field (99) was never named by any engine, and the most-named studio ranks 2nd of 12 on site quality.

AI visibility vs. site quality

How many of the 6 checks named each studio, and the best rank it achieved anywhere. Sorted by mentions, then by best rank.

Five of the 12 studios are never named on any of the 6 checks: Dance Journey Studios, Fred Astaire Dance Studios Katy, Fred Astaire Dance Studios Memorial, Dance With Me Katy, El Sabor de Houston Dance Academy. For a studio not doing this work, that's the default outcome — not a penalty, just the result of nobody in that seat having claimed it yet.

What separates the winners from the rest

• Off-site proof, not just on-site polish. In its two answers, Perplexity cited studios' own websites (dancewithmeusa.com, fredastaire.com). The studios named most are the ones those sources already describe clearly.
• Being unmistakably “in West Houston.” Studios that serve West Houston from nearby towns need pages, profiles and listings that say so in the words people search.
• A complete, specific site. The strongest sites have no missing H1s or meta descriptions, alt text on their images, and schema that describes what the studio actually is.
• Content matched to how people actually ask. The broad question and the ballroom question pull from different result sets — a studio needs to answer both.
